Human Resources Director

This position is located in our Severna Park, MD headquarters

We are a fun, fast-growing team of 40 people based in Severna Park, MD (conveniently located near Annapolis and Baltimore). Our company has been featured on the Inc 5000 list of fastest growing companies and ranked as a finalist in Baltimore Business Journal’s Best Places to Work.

We are currently seeking an experienced Human Resources Director to join our leadership team. The Human Resources Director will be the employee and cultural steward of our organization, working closely with leadership to nurture a values driven culture that will foster and support our fast-growing team.

The Human Resources Director will build a human resources department and develop human resources practices and objectives that will provide an employee-oriented, high-performance culture that emphasizes empowerment, quality, productivity and standards, goal attainment, and the recruitment and ongoing development of a superior workforce. 

HR Director Responsibilities: 

  • Employee and Cultural Steward
    • Constantly talk to and listen to employees and managers 
    • Voice and channel feedback to the leadership team
    • Advocate for changes needed 
    • Ensure our values and our employees’ views are represented well in leadership decisions
    • Manage the quarterly employee NPS survey
    • Coordinate and manage action items coming out of e-NPS 
  • Performance Management 
    • Manage and coordinate performance management processes 
    • Conduct investigations when employee complaints or concerns are brought forth
    • Work closely with team leads to address performance issues and ensure appropriate processes are followed 
    • Review, guide, and approve management recommendations for employment terminations
  • Compensation 
    • Run payroll process, ensuring all types of compensation are accurately reflected 
    • Establish the company wage and salary structure, pay policies, and oversee the variable pay systems within the company including commissions, bonuses, and raises
    • Lead competitive market research to establish pay practices and bands that help to recruit and retain superior staff
    • Manage the employee classifications for pay structure for each department 
  • Benefits 
    • With the assistance of the COO, obtain cost-effective, employee-serving benefits; monitor national benefits environment for options and cost savings
    • Lead the development of benefit orientations and other benefits training
    • Recommend changes in benefits offered, especially new benefits aimed at employee satisfaction and retention
    • Manage PTO policy and the tracking of PTO to ensure balances are accurate, and work with leadership to address PTO issues within their teams 
  • Legal 
    • Lead company compliance with all existing governmental and labor legal and reporting requirements 
    • Maintain minimal company exposure to lawsuits
    • Serve as the primary contact with the company employment law attorney and outside government agencies
    • Protect the interests of employees and the company in accordance with company Human Resources policies and governmental laws and regulations
  • Organizational Design
    • Design, direct, and manage a company-wide process of organization development that addresses issues such as succession planning, superior workforce development, key employee retention, organization design, and change management
    • Manage employee communication and feedback through such avenues as e-NPS, company meetings, suggestion programs, newsletters, employee focus groups, one-on-one meetings, Basecamp, and Google Drive
    • Direct a process of organizational planning that evaluates company structure, job design, and personnel forecasting throughout the company
  • Company Policies 
    • Partner with leadership to communicate Human Resources policies, procedures, programs, and laws
    • Work with leadership to ensure company handbook and employee policies are up to date and encouraging desired behavior 
  • Hiring 
    • Work with each hiring manager to establish current and effective descriptions for open roles 
    • Identify the best recruiting channels for roles 
    • Manage job postings and descriptions 
    • Liaise with 3rd party recruiters as needed   
    • Manage intake process for new employees
  • Employee Learning and Development
    • Manage new hire onboarding process, working with trainer(s) to create effective training curriculums for each role type 
    • Manage ongoing training process, working with trainer(s) to have regular cadence of training that addresses skill gaps, encourages employees to grow, and is a balance of various skills being developed 
    • Manage mentoring program, soliciting interest, gathering feedback, optimizing the program and managing the logistics of pairings and the objectives 
  • Executive Coaching and Development
    • Identify leadership development opportunities and programs for leadership team 
    • Work with COO to plan leadership group retreats 
    • Identify and manage leadership programs for HiPo future leaders 

Requirements: 

  • Broad knowledge and experience in employment law, compensation, organizational planning, organization development, employee relations, safety, training, and development
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build, lead, and develop Human Resources departments 
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a successful participant on the leadership team and provide company leadership and direction
  • Experience in the administration of benefits and compensation programs and other Human Resources programs
  • Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality
  • Excellent organizational skills
